Trace Elements in Mussels (Mytilus Edulis) from German Coastal Waters. Evaluation of Multielement Patterns with Respect to Their Use for Monitoring Programmes

Mussels were collected from 19 sites along the German coast of the North and Baltic Seas. The following elements were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis: Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Se Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Eu, Tb, Yb, Au, Hg, Th. In addition to regional differences in concentrations of these elements, there are significant seasonal fluctuations. Concentrations of all elements are found to be positively intercorrelated. There are regional differences, however, in the type of interdependance, expressed as concentration ratios. These will be discussed in view of the regional geochemical situation and modifications by anthropogenic contamination. (Atomindex citation 10:469541)
