Aqueous solutions of glycine and acetate have been pulse irradiated in the presence of O sub 2 . Radicals produced from these compounds by H-abstraction,reacted with O sub 2to form peroxy radicals. The reaction rate constants k/sub (RH+O sub 2 )/ = (2.1 +- 0.3) x 10exp 9and approx. = 1 x 10exp 9 m exp -1sec exp -1measured for RH =acetate radicals and glycine radicals,at pH 8.2and 7.9,respectively. The peroxy acetate radicals decay by a second order reaction, k = (6.5 +- 1) x 10exp 8 M exp -1sec exp -1at both pH = 5.7and 8.2. The peroxy glycine radicals produce O sub 2-by a first order process, k = (1.5 +- 0.3) x 10exp 5sec exp -1at pH = 7.9. Evidence for the formation of O sub 2-from glycine peroxy radicals is presented.
