Biphenyl compounds have been used in various industrial applications. Because of chemical stability and resistance to thermal decomposition, they are ideally suited as heat-transfer fluids-one of their main applications. Biphenyl compounds have also been used as dye carriers for plastics and synthetic fibers and, to a lesser degree, as coatings for estrus fruit wrappers because of their mild fungicidal properties.nAside from extensive use in the electrical industry, polychlorinated derivatives (PCBs) also appear in certain pesticide formulations. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) have found widespread applications as fire retardants.
