IN-CORE GAS RELEASE CAPSULE DEVELOPMENT

This paper describes the development tests which demonstrate the feasi¬bility of a fusible plug concept as a predictable and reliable in-core gas release mechanism. The objective of the development tests were to (1) select three plug materials, (2) establish the plug fabrication technique, (3) opti¬mize a protective coating for the plugs such that they could survive in sodium for a minimum of 30 days, and (4) simulate both "burst" and "slow-leak" releases from the capsules.
