A Materials-Process-Product Model of coal-process technology has been developed for the U.S. Department of Energy. This model is an application of a methodology, previously developed under a grant from the National Science Foundation, for systematically analyzing an array of competing manufacturing technologies from economic, environmental, and energy policy perspectives. The model consists of:n• A data base for coal-related materials and coal conversion processes.n• An algorithmic structure that facilitates systematicnevaluations in response to exogenously specified variables such as tax policy, environmental limitations, and changes in process technology and costs.
