The purposes of this manual are to highlight a few of the many applications of computers in the process industry and to provide the technical reader with a basic understanding of computer tech¬nology, terminology, and the interactions among the various elements of a process computer system. It is hoped that this information will help to bridge the communications gap that generally exists between the process engineer and computer vendors and programmers. The manual has been organized to separate process applications and economics from computer technology so that the reader can select the sections of particular interest.
