Comparison of Compensation Paid Scientists and Engineers in Research and Development DOE National Survey of Compensation

There was a decrease of nondegreed and BS level personnel both in percentage points and in actual numbers. The proportion of DOE Laboratory S&E's with PhD's increased by 1.7 percentage points to 36.5% which is nearly twice the National Survey PhD ratio of 18.5%. In eight DOE Laboratories, 40% or more of the S&E's had PhD degrees, while only the University sector in the National Survey exceeded 40%. Conversely, DOE Laboratories continued to employ a significantly lower proportion at the BS level.nIn the National Survey, MS level S&E's increased by 1.6 percentage points, while the other levels decreased by 1.0 percentage points, or less.
