PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF UREA-FORMALDEHYDE FOAM FOR RESIDENTIAL INSULATION PartⅠ: The Effects of Temperature and Humidity on Formaldehyde Release from Urea-Formaldehyde Foam Insulation
Emissions of formaldehyde from the low temperature chambers were similar to that of the high temperature condition. The difference between the emission from the low humidity and high humidity chambers was not as pronounced as in the high temperature situation. Evaporation (water and HCHO), attainment of equilibrium and hydrolysis would occur at a slower rate. Since the temperature was low, differences in emission due to hydrolysis would not be seen until the free formaldehyde had disappeared. Both types of emission from free and hydrolyzed formaldehyde would be indistinguishable if the emission is prolonged due to lower temperatures.
