This report concludes the work reported in EPRI/ERDA final report, "A New Class of Additives to Inhibit Tree Growth in Solid Extruded Cable Insulation", No. TD 145 (EPRI Project RP7830-1, ERDA Contract E(49-18) -1826). The intent of the work was the development of an additive that would inhibit tree growth in extruded dielectrics.nFerrocene (5 percent) inhibits treeing and raises the needle-plane breakdown voltage by approximately 100 percent. However, it is unstable (oxidizes) both in air and in the presence of dicumylperoxide. None of the antioxidants investigated stabilized ferrocene. The effectiveness of ferrocene is not due to an increase in intrinsic dielectric strength, or electron scavenging properties, but seems to be related to the low ionization potential of the compound.
