Fission Product Behavior in HTGR Fuel Particles Made from Weak-Acid Resins

Fission product retention and behavior are of utmost importance in HTGR fuel particles. The present study concentrates on particles made from weak-acid resins, which can vary in composition from 100% UO sub 2 plus excess carbon to 100% UC sub 2 plus excess carbon. Five compositions were tested: UC sub 4 sub 58 O sub 2 sub 04 , UC sub 3 sub 68 O sub 0 sub 01 , UC sub 4 sub 39 O sub 1 sub 72 , UC sub 4 sub 63 O sub 0 sub 97 , and UC sub 4 sub 14 O sub 1 sub 53 . Metallographically sectioned particles were examined with a shielded electron microprobe. The distributions of the fission products were determined by monitoring characteristic x-ray lines while scanning the electron beam over the particle surface. (ERA citation 04:036398)
