Computer Programs for the Automatic Placement of Integrated Circuits.

In high-speed digital circuits long wires introduce unwanted time delays and electrical noise. Two computer programs,based on different algorithms,were therefore developed for the automatic placement of integrated circuits (chips) on UNIVERSAL cards and CASH cards. The algorithms use elementary ideas of graph theory to construct a placement of the chips. The merit of the placement is measured by a quantity approximating the average length per wire. The better of the two programs placed 106chips on CASH cards in 13 s of computer time,with an average of 2.9in. (7.4cm) per wire.
