The Status of Borehole Plugging & ShaftnSealing for Geologic Isolation of Radioactive Waste

Although significant knowledge exists relative to materials and techniques for sealing shafts and plugging boreholes (mainly for purposes not related to nuclear waste disposal), it is evident that this knowledge is of limited value in meeting all of the requirements for nuclear repository sealing. The first step toward solving this problem is to define the objectives and requirements for repository sealing. Following this definition, clearly defined programs to acquire required additional data or knowledge can be undertaken.
