This report examines the key aspects of the energy supply and demand situation in developing countries. It begins by defining five categories that reflect the differences among these countries' economic and resource structures, their levels of development, and the energy options available to them. For each country group, the energy supply and demand is projected, by fuel type, to the years 1990 and 2020. On the basis of the available estimates of resource development costs, we have quantified the financial requirements for these countries to achieve aggregate energy self-sufficiency The analysis is extended through a consideration of the determinants and sources of investment capital for energy development.
