A method for manufacturing 2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one comprises the ring closure treatment of dialkylacetals of beta .delta-dioxocapronaldehyde as indicated by the general formula (R exp 1 O) sub 2 CHCH sub 2 COCH sub 2 COCH sub 3 , (in which formula, R exp 1 indicates a lower alkyl group) to obtain 2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one.
