Rapid Ethanol Production Via Fermentation

The flash-ferm process for industrial rapid ethanol fermentation with ethanol removal and concentration in an auxiliary flash vessel has been developed. The super high productivities (80 g ethanol/L.hr.) of the vacu-ferm processes are maintained while many disadvantages are eliminated. Flash-ferm combines synergistically with a vacuum distillation, providing a high ethanol concentration feed to the less strongly pinch limited separator. A 42% energy savings and a 54% reduction in manufacturing cost (exclusive of feed) is achieved as compared to conventional bath processes. (ERA citation 05:017476)
