In heavy water type nuclear reactors the detection and control of heavy water and light water escapes from different systems is of vital importance in the successful and economic operation of these type of plants. The high cost of heavy water makes it imperative to minimise all such escapes, in order to reduce the loss as well as the upgrading cost of downgraded collection recovered from the reactor building. Original methods and devices have been developed at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant which successfully solve this problem.
