Modulated Ordering Nb-H Alloys

Ordering reactions in alpha ' and beta -NbH alloys have been investigated using elastic theory. The alpha '- beta and beta -lambda phase transformations are driven by the elastic interaction in the niobium lattice distorted by the protons on the t-site interstitials. The beta phase is shown to have a three dimensional structure. The fundamental period of the long range modulation along the c-axis in the lambda-phase, an incommensurated beta phase, is approximately 5 lattice constants. (ERA citation 04:039175)
