Technical Summary Attachment to ECC Bypass RIL. Volume I: Review of Findings

This Topical Report is a contractor attachment to the Research Information Letter (RIL) entitled 'Small Scale ECC Bypass Research Results'. The RIL, and this report, deal with countercurrent flow and superheated wall behavior in PWR downcomers. The topics of lower plenum voiding, flashing, and refill are deferred to later documents. In this report the author reviews the purposes of the work, summarizes the work performed by Creare, identifies significant findings in all available work, discusses the applicability of the findings to licensing, and recommends further research. A companion volume of technical appendices to this report addresses sensitivity calculations at PWR scale, assessment of countercurrent flow data, comparisons of calculations with LOFT data.
