The design, manufacture and testing of a magnetic coupling, which has been developed to provide rotary motion within a high vacuum system with an externally mounted drive motor is described. The need for such a device became apparent in the early design stage of the 30 MV tandem electrostatic accelerator constructed at Daresbury Laboratory. The accelerator stack which contains the beam line equipment and tube is housed within a vessel which is pressurised with SF sub 6 gas to 8 atmospheres. Beam line equipment must be capable of operating within this SF sub 6 environment whilst sustaining an internal vacuum of better than 3 x 10 exp -7 torr. The magnetic coupling which has been designed for use on the 'X Y' defining slits filfills these exacting requirements. (Atomindex citation 11:505597)
