Report of the Subgroup on DOE Waste-Special Issues of the Interagency Review Group on Nuclear Waste Mangement

This report was compiled by Subgroup No. 3 of the Interagency Review Group (IRG) for Nuclear Waste Management. This Subgroup on "Defense Wastes - Special Issues" received guidance in the form of Appendix A. It was asked to address radioactive "defense wastes," which it broadly interpreted as wastes from defense programs and from research and development and related activities of the Department of Energy, herein after referred to as "DOE wastes." However, most of the material in this report can be readily generalized to address commercial wastes as well.nThis subgroup sees no reason to recommend any difference in the treatment or disposal of wastes on the basis of its origin in DOE or commercial activities. Instead, all wastes should be treated on the basis of their physical and chemical properties, regardless of whether they originated in DOE or commercial activities.
