Wind Tunnel Model Experiments on a Buoyant Emission from a Building.

The report describes wind tunnel model experiments of a preliminary nature on a leak of buoyant gas from the face of a building, the intention being to reproduce some facets of one kind of catastrophic reactor failure. The measurements covered heat release rates of 1 to 100 MW over a windspeed range of 1 to 10 ms exp -1 . Measurements were made of ground level concentrations of the released gas downwind of the building, together with a limited number of vertical concentration measurements. Results of the experiments showed that ground level concentrations were mainly determined by plume buoyancy; the point of emission on the building, or even the presence of the building having only a secondary effect.
