It was the aim of this research to develop a low density, self-extinguishing insulation material. The research was carried out on a lab scale, a semi-industrial and an industrial scale. The laboratory research yielded a formulation which could be used on a semi-industrial scale. There, however, two difficulties arose: the appearance of cavities at the bottom of the blocks and a nonlinear rise curve, which could have implications at an industrial scale. However, laboratory investigations revealed that the cavities of the blocks could be overcome when an alcanol amine was added to the formulation. The effect of the nonlinearity of the rise curve could be minimized when a perfect coordination of the mechanical parameters was performed. Further treatment of the blocks consisted of sawing panels and crushing them. The physical parameters of the panels were measured and found to meet the requirements set. Test samples were sent to TNO, and got a positive appreciation. Afterwards, the density of the foam was a little enhanced. An economic evaluation of the application of polyurea foam in a bungalow type house shows to be quite positive. (ERA citation 05:029360)
