Environmental Effects of Producing Biomass in Pine and Hardwood Plantation for Renewable Energy Resources

Conversion of woody biomass into useable energy forms has stimulated interest in increasing biomass production to help meet the nation's energy needs. However, maximizing biomass production may be limited by the decrease in fertility of soils. The environmental effects of applying sewage sludge to maximize forest production is being studied at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Plant. (ERA citation 06:010510)
