Preconditions for and Experience with Quality Assurance in Developing Countries

The main aspects treated in this lecture concern to the differences in passing from conventional projects to nuclear power plants. This step requires the establishment of QA programs covering the activities of the utility, the architect-engineer, the NSSS supplier, the manufacturers and installer in all safety related components and structures. Indicative estimates are given regarding the manpower requirements and the cost of QA in the construction of a nuclear power plant. Special emphasis is granted to the qualifications, training and certification of QA and QC personnel. To illustrate this point and the transfer of technology to developing countries, examples of Mexico and Brazil are presented. Finally, an outline is given of IAEA capability in providing assistance in QA to developing countries. (Atomindex citation 14:761854)
