The papers presented for this topic have shown the importance of inspection and surveillance in order to avoid hazard to the general public, the operating personnel or to the plant itself. Also, the aspect of component fault prevention is becoming increasingly important. The advisability of minimizing the reactor outage time for availability reasons requires that plant faults be detected and remedied at a reasonably early stage in their development. Economic investigations have shown the need for high levels of component and structural reliability, particularly in cases where failures of those components or structures could result in long reactor outage times. It is estimated that large sums of money could be saved if in-service inspection or surveillance was provided that was capable of detecting failures at the potentially dangerous stage.
