A procedure has been developed for the quantitative determination of traces of mercury in biological samples. The radiochemical separation method used involves the combustion of samples in an oxygen flask, followed by a substoichiometric isotope dilution method utilizing a solvent extraction technique. The method was primarily tested using radiotracer experiments and then by analyzing two already certified NBS Standard Reference Materials, Orchard Leaves and Bovine Liver, and a Bowen's Standard Kale Sample. The limit of detection is 0.005 ppm. The technique developed is comparatively simple, inexpensive, fast and suitable for routine work. (Atomindex citation 14:757591)
