Chemistry of Nitro Complexes of Nitrosylruthenium

Ruthenium has an especially complex chemical behavior because of its chemical properties. Certain difficulties arise with ruthenium in the treatment of highly radioactive fission products during the reprocessing of spent fuel. Nitrous acid and nitrogen oxides formed when spent fuel is dissolved in nitric acid transform ruthenium contained in the fission products into nitrosylruthenium. Nitrosylruthenium has been studied by many investigators. In this report, data published on nitro complexes of nitrosylruthenium are reviewed and compared with the author's experiences in the study of tetranitro complexes of nitrosylruthenium.
