A simplified method of estimating the potential for photochemical air pollution formation in the United Kingdom based on the role of the individual hydrocarbons is described. For each hydrocarbon, three factors are required to define its potential contribution to ozone, PAN and other photochemical pollutant formation, downwind from its point of emission. These are, the inventory, reactivity and stoichiometry factors. The method of calculating these factors and their application in a variety of UK situations is described. Results are obtained using 10 x 10 km and 150 x 150 km grids across England and North West Europe, respectively, illustrating the regional and, continental scales of photochemical air pollution.
