Workshop Proceedings: U-Bend Tube Cracking in Steam Generators

The workshop on U-bend cracking of alloy 600 tubes in steam generaters was organized by the Steam Generator Project Office. The objectives were to present available details of the several incidences of cracking, to discuss possible contributing causes, to assess techniques for defining and studying the problem and to recommend remedial courses of action which reduce the cracking in existing steam generators or prevent cracking new steam generators. The subject areas included: concerns about U-bend cracking, occurrence and examination of U-bend cracks, factors affecting cracking of alloy 600, and environmental and other factors for corrective action. Papers were presented by representatives from utilities, nuclear steam system suppliers, independent laboratories, a university, service companies and EPRI. The proceedings are presented as a contribution to the understanding and elimination of U-bend cracking in steam generators.
