Novel Approach to the Growth of Anaerobic Microorganisms

Previous studies have indicated that a partially purified membrane fraction from Escherichia coli can remove oxygen very efficiently from many bacteriological media. In contrast to the soluble chemical reducing agents frequently used to remove oxygen, membrane fragments are large and cannot penetrate bacterial cells. Furthermore the fragments are more specific in their action and convert oxygen to water by an enzymatic process. These observations suggested that such membranes might provide a novel means of stimulating the growth of anaerobic bacteria. In this contribution, some of the properties of the membrane fraction are described, and the results of a survey of its use with a variety of anaerobic bacteria under several experimental conditions are given.
