摘要

The purpose was to increase the pyrolysis yield by oxidation of a good precursor such as Catalytic Incorporated asphaltene without sacrificing mesophase growth as determined by the microstructure. Asphaltene was oxidized to two higher levels of oxygen content by: (1) heating in air at 100 exp 0 C for two days which increased the oxygen content from 4.5% to 5.83% by weight; (2) oxidizing over chromyl chloride to replace aromatic methyl groups by aldehyde groups which increased the oxygen content to 9.62% by weight. Increasing the oxygen content to 5.83% increased the pyrolysis yield and also did not affect the microstructure but an increase to 9.62% which gave higher yields, completely destroyed the graphitizability of the precursor.
