Elimination of Output-Current Transients in the MFTF Sustaining Neutral-Beam-Arc Power Supplies

The twenty-three (23) MFTF sustaining neutral beam arc power supplies were designed to provide 0.3 to 30 second output pulses over a range of 24 to 71 volts and 600 to 4000 amperes at 10 percent duty. For economic reasons, the circuit design consists of a 12 pulse rectifier which is asynchronously switched on and off by a three phase electromechanical contactor in the primary ac input. The paper describes the analysis of the problem, various possible solutions considered, and the simple and inexpensive solution adopted for use. (ERA citation 07:013549)
