Progress has been good and has led to a much better understanding of alkali metal reduction processes. Major areas are as follows: (1) Reaction Conditions and Structural Types. Information about the nature of the anionic intermediates (radical anions, monoanions, dianions) has led to an improved method for selecting reaction conditions. (2) Reductive Alkylations. This Sternberg alkylation type process has been investigated with naphthalene and anthracene. (3) Conformational Analysis. Molecular mechanics calculations have been carried out for the reduced hydrocarbons and have produced unexpected results. (4) Protonation Sites in Dianions. Recent results challenge the concept of charge density for predicting protonation sites in dianions. (ERA citation 06:031560)
