Experiments investigating the mechanism of conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfate aerosols in the presence of ethylene in the atmosphere are also discussed. The importance of ethylene in the atmosphere arises from the fact that its reactions in the atmosphere lead to the formation of hydroxyl and peroxy radicals which take part in rapid oxidation of gases like sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. The various intermediate reactions involved in the formation of the end products in the reactions of ethylene with other trace gases in the atmosphere are discussed.
