A special-purpose borehole explosive tool designed to meet a need of the Los Alamos National laboratory Hot Dry Rock (HDR) Geothermal Energy Development Program is described. This tool's particular purpose is to sever stuck drill pipe in deep (> 4500 m), hot (> 320 exp 0 C), water-filled wellbores. No commercial severing tools are known to us that can be operated at temperatures above 260 exp 0 C. (ERA citation 07:059446)
