This report presents a review of development efforts and the current status of high performance, high specific output (about 100 kW/m2) silicon photovoltaic solarnsystems. The three system concepts reviewed are:n• high intensity irradiance from individual concentrators directly onto individual PV cells,n• large dish concentrator redirecting sunlight into a cavity receiver lined with a mosaic of cells, andn• a large dish concentrator redirecting sunlight into a thermo-photovoltaic (TPV) receiver.nKey issues, technical risk, and estimated performance for each system are discussed. Examination of these items led to the conclusion that TPV systems are not likely to be competitive to either direct conversion system. All three concepts require further cell and systems development efforts. The systems are also compared briefly to non-PV, that is solar thermal electric, systems using dish concentrators.
