This special report discusses how this capacity is used to supply today's consumers with electricity and how much new capacity is needed over the next ten years. The discussion is based on present demand projections by utilities and on alternate higher and lower projections.nOver the next decade, new capacity is needed to support economic growth, to pro¬vide for aging and retirement of plant, and to reduce dependence on oil and gas. Based on utility demand projections of 2.9 percent growth per year, 270 gigawatts of new ca¬pacity are needed by 1991 for these reasons.
