This enhanced recovery field demonstration is being conducted in the North Kern Front leases located eight miles north of Bakersfield, California. The primary goal is to evaluate the economic merits of ancillary materials to a conventional steam drive to improve sweep efficiencies. The ancillary materials are used to reduce injection in steam channels. Steam foams have been successfully used as a method of diverting the steam from existing channels. By the end of the second year of the contract, background data has been collected, observation wells have been drilled, four injection well treatments have been designed and started, and a comprehensive monitoring of data is underway. Chemical treatments began in January 1980, and by May 1980, all four treatments were underway. Evaluation of production data plotted by injection pattern shows definite variations in production rates in at least two treated patterns since the initiation of the chemical treatments in early 1980. Estimates of as much as 4560 barrels of incremental oil per day can be attributed during the third quarter of 1981, depending upon the type of production comparison used. Since the completion of the observation wells in late January 1980, five runs of Carbon-Oxygen Logs have been obtained by Dresser Atlas. The computer interpretation (EPILOG) indicates a reduction in residual oil saturations in some intervals. The accuracy of the changes in residual oil saturations, however, cannot be verified until the post pilot wells are drilled adjacent to the observation wells and actual oil saturations are determined from cores.
