Cellulosic materials from Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) were tested for their feasibility to be utilized in a process of ethanol production. The development of an ''immobilized growing S. cerevisiae cells system'' for either batch or continuous ethanol production was investigated. A column reactor, packed with gel beads containing immobilized 2 x 10 exp 9 cells/ml of gel, continuously produced ethanol at the concentration of about 4% from a crude sugar medium (glucose 7%, total reducing sugars 10%) obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated raw material. Continuous ethanol production was maintained for more than two weeks, with a conversion of 90% of total reducing sugars contained in the medium. 10 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab. (ERA citation 11:019418)
