Natural Radioactivity Releases from Coal Fired and Geothermal Power Plants in Italy

Problems posed by coal environmental impact, both from the chemical and radioactive point of view are considered. If radioactive airborne release only are considered a large variety of studies has been carried out leading to somewhat contradictory conclusions. It seems in fact that the environmental conditions considered and the foodchain taken into account be responsible of such variability, as well as the model adopted to interpret the transfer of radionuclides from the source to the environment. In Italy ENEA has started a program to evaluate the environmental impact of various energy systems (fossil fuels, geothermal fluids). In the framework of this program, a study on coal being used in Italy has been initiated, starting with the evaluation of radioactive release from coal fired and geothermal power plants.
