Lubrication and Support of a Single Piston Ring

This paper describes a generalized approximation scheme which is used in modeling piston ring motion, oil flow, and friction in internal combustion engines. Trial calculations are presented, and current weaknesses in the theory for an oil lubricated ring are discussed. As an exercise of the theory, a novel gas lubricated ring is presented, which has very low friction. (ERA citation 09:008208)
