Corrosion of Carbon Steel in Oxidizing Caustic Solutions

A series of tests have been completed on a range of proposed waste compositions at temperatures up to 100 exp 0 C. These tests have sought data on uniform corrosion, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking. No indication of the latter two types of corrosion were observed within the test matrix. Corrosion rates after four months were generally below 25 mu m/y. By the end of twelve months all results, except for very concentrated mixtures, were below 13 mu m/y. Prediction equations were generated from a model fitted to the data. The equations provide a rapid means of estimating the corrosion rate for waste compositions and temperatures within the test limits. (ERA citation 09:016045)
