Retrofilling Mineral-Oil-Filled Transformers Containing PCBs

The retrofilling technique used in this study consisted of draining a transformer of its mineral oil, flushing or hosing down the core and winding with approximately 20% of the transformer's liquid volume with noncontaminated mineral oil, and refilling with noncontaminated oil. During this retrofill operation, the drained transformer oil and the flush oil were emptied separately into Department of Transportation approved drums (two bunghole, sealed-top drums) so that independent samples could be taken. From the analysis of these samples, the effectiveness of this retrofill technique was evaluated and base data was established to reach conclusions about leaching of PCB from the core and winding of a transformer.
