Diagnostic-Monitoring System for Power-Plant Boilers

A passive, microcomputer based diagnostic-monitoring system has been developed to continuously monitor thirty-two critical-boiler-state variables and to predict the root cause of abnormal behavior in the boiler processes and control system. The development of the diagnostic logic and algorithms are discussed and the system operation is illustrated by case studies. The predictive capability of the diagnostic system is shown by a series of tests using aritifically placed malfunctions in a dynamic mathematical model of a power plant. The system hardware and software costs are discussed as well as the availability of data required. The diagnostic monitoring system will help to operate the plant more efficienctly and prevent unscheduled shutdowns. (ERA citation 08:045993)
