Status and Prospects of Muon-Catalyzed Fusion Research

A research program to investigate muon-catalyzed fusion was initiated in 1981 at the Idaho Naional Engineering Laboratory. The absolute fusion yield induced by muons in deuterium-tritium mixtures has now been measured for the first time, along with parameters which influence the fusion energy yield. The significance of the experimental results and related technological advances are considered. In view of recent progress, an expanded research effort is recommended and lines of research are proposed. (ERA citation 08:038196)
