Levelized energy costs for steam plants in the size range 15 MM Btu/h to 400 MM Btu/h have been estimated for steam produced by several different technologies, including stand-alone oil and coal-burning plants as well as solar central receiver - fossil boiler hybrid plants. Models for the costs of plant subsystems used in these calculations are presented and discussed. Designs of the solar-fossil hybrids examined were optimized with respect to solar fraction and amount of thermal storage used by simulation of plant operation. The resulting levelized energy costs and their sensitivity to various modelling parameters are presented and discussed. (ERA citation 08:023253)
