A system was developed for the continuous plasma treatment of fibrous, reinforcing materials used in composites. Data are presented on the removal of moisture from Kevlar 49 Aramid by the use of argon and zero air plasma. Adhesion test results with plasma-treated, unidirectional Kevlar 49/epoxy laminates showed an improvement in adhesion ranging from 1.4 to 3.7 times, as reported by the plasma treatment effectiveness parameter. Limited tensile testing of resin-impregnated yarn showed no catastropic failure from plasma treatment. (ERA citation 08:056088)
