The effects of austenitizing and tempering heat treatments on carbide precipitation in the alloy HT-9 have been investigated and documented. The study indicated that for specimens tempered at 650, 700, and 750 exp 0 C the amount of carbide precipitation was independent of the austenitizing temperature. However, for specimens tempered at 800 exp 0 C, the carbide precipitation varied as a function of austenitizing temperature. The maximum carbide precipitation for an 800 exp 0 C temper treatment occurred at 1175 exp 0 C austenitizing temperature. Carbide size at constant tempering temperature varied as a function of austenitizing temperature for all temper treatments. Samples austenitized at 1100 exp 0 C and tempered at 650 exp 0 C showed an unusually high carbide size in relation to other samples tempered at 650 exp 0 C. Carbide size as a function of tempering temperature increased with increasing austenitizing temperature. (ERA citation 08:043802)
