The overall purpose of this study was to evaluate the primary sulfate emissions from utility boilers burning pulverized western subbituminous coal or lignite and equipped with flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wet scrubber systems. Of the four sites tested, all used spray tower absorbers for SO sub 2 control. At two sites, alkaline fly ash was the main FGD reagent (Fly Ash alkali process); at the other two sites the main reagents were lime and limestone, respectively. At three sites the scrubbers were preceded by electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) for particulate control. At one site particulate control was done by a venturi particulate scrubber within the FGD module. The results of the study indicate that the FGD wet scrubbers tested removed significant amounts of particulates and sulfate in addition to efficiently removing SO sub 2 . (ERA citation 08:043213)
