Forest vegetation is particularly important sink for atmospheric emissions; because of their reactivity and large surface areas, foliar canopies are effective receptors of airborne material delivered by both wet and dry deposition. Dry deposition cannot be neglected in studies of the role of the atmosphere in geochemical cycling, particularly for elements deposited in water-soluble form. We report here results of investigations on the rates and processes of atmospheric deposition of H exp + , Cd, Mn, Pb, and Zn to several forested areas in the eastern United States. These data suggest the need to consider the interactions between acid precipitation and deposited particles. (ERA citation 08:042151)
